Understanding and Adjusting Xenon Headlights

Xenon Headlights, known for their bright, crisp white light, offer superior visibility compared to traditional halogen bulbs. However, factors like vehicle modifications or component replacement can necessitate adjustments to ensure optimal performance and avoid blinding oncoming traffic. This comprehensive guide outlines two methods for adjusting xenon headlights: a simple manual adjustment and a more advanced procedure involving diagnostic software.

Manual Adjustment of Xenon Headlights

This method is suitable for minor adjustments and requires minimal tools and expertise.

Tools Required:

  • Phillips head screwdriver

Time Required: Approximately 5 minutes

Procedure:

  1. Park on a Level Surface: Park your vehicle on a flat surface approximately 20 feet away from a wall perpendicular to the front of the car. Conducting this process in a dimly lit environment enhances visibility.

  2. Open the Hood: Access the headlight adjusters located behind the headlights. These adjusters are often concealed by dust covers that can be easily removed.

  3. Turn on Headlights: Activate the headlights without starting the engine, or start the engine if battery power is a concern.

  4. Locate the Adjusters: Identify the vertical and lateral adjustment screws. Vertical adjusters, typically marked with a circular symbol, control the up and down movement of the beam. Lateral adjusters, usually indicated by a horizontal symbol, control the left and right aiming. Refer to your vehicle’s owner’s manual for precise locations if needed.   5. Adjust the Vertical Aim: Cover one headlight to isolate the beam pattern of the other. Using the Phillips head screwdriver, slowly turn the vertical adjuster.     Important: Aim for a downward angle of approximately 1.5 degrees. At 20 feet, the headlight beam should be roughly 0.5 inches lower than the headlight itself. Procedure:

  1. Prepare the Vehicle: For lowered vehicles, raising all four wheels off the ground is strongly recommended. This ensures accurate recalibration by preventing ride height sensors from interfering with the process.

  2. Connect to Vehicle: Connect the VAG-COM cable to the vehicle’s diagnostic port and launch the VCDS software on your computer.

  3. Access Xenon Range Controller: Select “Select Control Module,” then choose “55-Xenon Range.”

  4. Reset to Factory Defaults: Navigate to “Adaptation – 10.” Enter channel 00 and click “Read” to load factory defaults. Click “Save” to apply the reset.

  5. Basic Settings Adjustment: Go to “Basic Settings – 04” and click “Go!” to initiate the learning process. The software will prompt you to adjust the headlights manually. Follow the manual adjustment instructions outlined in the previous section. The VCDS software will confirm successful adjustment. If no manual adjustment is needed, wait 20-30 seconds in the “LEARNING” state for the module to learn the current headlight positions.

  6. Verify Fault Code Clearance: Check for fault codes within the Xenon Range controller to confirm the successful completion of the adjustment procedure. Absence of fault codes indicates proper headlight function.
