Finding information on how to reprogram the VIN in your Chevrolet Cruze radio can be challenging. This guide provides a step-by-step walkthrough of the disassembly process, enabling access to the chip for reprogramming. This process is for the standard MyLink radio found in many Chevrolet Cruzes. While similar to the navigation radio, there are minor differences.
Understanding the Risks and Precautions
Working with radio electronics requires caution due to their sensitivity to static electricity. Before starting, take these precautions to prevent damage:
- Avoid Static: Don’t wear static-attracting materials like wool and avoid rubbing against carpet or nylon.
- Grounded Workspace: Work on a hard surface, not carpet or fabric. Ground yourself by touching a grounded metal object, like a computer case (plugged in but OFF), before handling circuit boards. Consider an anti-static wrist strap for added protection.
- Careful Handling: Hold PC boards by the edges, avoiding contact with components. Don’t place them on static-conductive surfaces.

Tools and Preparation
Gather the following tools before beginning:
- Small Phillips Head Screwdriver
- Regular Phillips Head Screwdriver
- Flat Blade Screwdriver
For reference: “Top” refers to the side with the sticker label, “Front” is the side with the CD slot, and “Left” is the side with the heat sink and fan.
Disassembly Steps
1. Removing the Front Panel Screws:
- Unscrew the two black Phillips head screws beneath the CD slot securing the CD mechanism’s front.
- Remove the seven silver screws around the front panel: three on the right, two on top, and two on the left. (See image below)
2. Detaching the Heat Sink and Fan:
- On the left side, remove the four black screws, then the two silver screws in the heat sink’s center, followed by the silver screws near the fan.
- Carefully detach the heat sink. Unplug the fan connector from the PC board by gently pulling upward.
- Important: Do not remove the white thermal grease on the heat sink or amplifier chip.
3. Removing the Front Panel:
- Using a flat blade screwdriver, gently pry the front panel forward about a quarter inch by inserting it into the slots at the top between the front and top panels.
- Locate the small square holes on each side of the front panel and release the internal tabs with the flat blade screwdriver.
- Carefully slide off the front panel, mindful of the attached Bluetooth antenna and CD control cable. Peel the CD ribbon cable from the panel.
4. Separating the Radio Halves:
- Remove the screw on the right side’s center and the two screws on the back.
- Carefully lift and turn the top half to access the Bluetooth antenna connector.
5. Disconnecting the Bluetooth Antenna and CD Control Cable:
- Gently lift the gold-plated Bluetooth antenna connector with your fingernails.
- Carefully pull the CD control cable out of its connector on the PC board.
6. Removing the Top PC Board:
- Unscrew the four screws securing the top PC board (two at the rear, two on the front metal bracket).
- Gently lift the board to unplug it from the bottom board.
7. Removing the XM Radio:
- Carefully lift the sides of the XM radio ribbon cable connector to unlock and remove the cable.
- Unscrew the two external screws holding the XM radio in place.
8. Removing the Bottom Board:
- Unscrew the five screws securing the bottom board (one on the back by the antenna connector).
- Carefully lift the board to access the programmable chip.
9. Programming the Chip: (Consult specific programming instructions for your needs)
10. Reassembly: Reverse the steps above, ensuring all connections are secure and cables are properly seated. When reconnecting the ribbon cables, ensure they are oriented correctly.
By following these steps, you can successfully access the VIN chip in your Chevrolet Cruze radio for reprogramming. Remember to exercise caution and consult additional resources if needed.
