DaVinci Resolve offers two distinct bussing architectures: Fixed Bus and Flexi Bus. While hybrid projects incorporating both are possible, it’s highly recommended to stick to a single architecture within a project for optimal performance and to avoid potential complications. Ideally, projects should be completed in the same environment they were initiated in. Fixed Bus is generally preferred for legacy projects or when specifically desired.
Resolve allows for customized Project Presets tailored to each bussing architecture, including a User Default Configuration. Timeline Configuration Presets can also be defined for each. However, these presets are not interchangeable between Fixed and Flexi Bus due to fundamental differences in their internal structures. Two separate folders house these presets: “Console” for Fixed Bus and “Console_Flexi” for Flexi Bus.
Typically, each bussing architecture is assigned dedicated Project Presets, configurable in the Project Settings window. While the “User Default Config” often defaults to Fixed Bus for new projects, Flexi Bus presets can be loaded when needed for new projects requiring that architecture.
Within the “Create New Timeline” window, enabling the “Use Fairlight Preset” option exposes the corresponding Timeline Configuration Presets: “Console” presets for Fixed Bus projects and “Console_Flexi” presets for Flexi Bus projects. This ensures the correct preset is applied based on the project’s bussing architecture.
To establish Fixed Bus as the default architecture, consult the DaVinci Resolve 17 Manual, specifically Chapter 6, Project Settings, Page 121, which provides detailed instructions on configuring these settings. Understanding these fundamental differences between Fixed and Flexi Bus architectures is crucial for a smooth and efficient workflow in DaVinci Resolve.
