Eligibility and Prerequisites for the SJSU Wound Care Program

To be eligible for the Nursing Specialty Advanced Certificate Program in Wound Care at SJSU, applicants must meet specific criteria:

  • Registered Nurse (RN) with a Baccalaureate Degree or Higher: Applicants holding a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), Master of Science in Nursing (MSN), Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP), or PhD in Nursing are eligible to apply.
  • RN with a Bachelor’s Degree in Another Field: Registered nurses with a bachelor’s degree in a field other than nursing must also fulfill the following requirements:
    • One year of RN clinical nursing experience after obtaining RN licensure.
    • Current clinical nursing experience OR completion of a nurse refresher course OR a clinical performance examination within five years of applying to the program.

Applying to the San Jose State University Wound Care Program

The application process for the SJSU Wound Care program involves three key steps:

1. Cal State Apply Application

All applications are submitted through Cal State Apply, the centralized application portal for the California State University system.

  • Select the desired term (Fall, Spring, etc.) for enrollment.
  • Choose “second bachelor’s degree and beyond and certificate” as your degree goal.
  • Search for “San Jose” to find the “San Jose Extension” section and locate the “Wound and Ostomy Nursing Specialty Advanced Certificate” program. This is the umbrella program under which you will find the Wound Care specialty certification.

2. Program-Specific Documents

In addition to the Cal State Apply submission, applicants must upload the following documents:

  • Current Resume/CV: Provide an updated resume or curriculum vitae outlining your professional experience and qualifications.

3. Official Transcripts

Post-Acceptance Requirements for the Wound Care Program

Upon acceptance into the SJSU Wound Care Program, there are additional requirements:

  • Program Application Fee: A $100 application fee is required in addition to the Cal State Apply fee. This fee must be paid before the program starts.
  • Background Check and Drug Screen: Clinical agencies mandate a cleared criminal background check and a negative urine drug screen for all students before starting clinical rotations. Instructions for completing these requirements will be provided upon acceptance.
