Problems with Nissan NV200: Gearbox, Engine, and More

The Nissan NV200 is a popular compact van, but some owners have reported significant problems. One owner in Wales reported three gearbox repairs and a complete engine replacement within just 39,000 miles on a three-year-old NV200. Initially, Nissan hesitated to cover these repairs under warranty because the vehicle was serviced by an independent MOT-qualified garage, highlighting potential warranty issues with non-dealer servicing.

The owner also criticized Nissan’s customer service, describing the “Nissan helpdesk” as the “Nissan helpless desk” due to their unhelpful responses and refusal to escalate issues. The repeated breakdowns resulted in nearly two months of downtime, significantly impacting the business relying on the vehicle.

The gearbox issues included a failed fifth gear, a faulty slave cylinder, and a dislodged fourth gear. The repairing garage suggested the Renault Megane-derived gearbox might be inadequate for the NV200’s demands. These repairs cost the owner £1,300, a substantial expense not covered by the warranty.

Beyond the major engine and gearbox problems, this particular NV200 also suffered two radiator failures due to stone damage from the lack of a protective grill. It also endured seven windscreen replacements due to stone chips. While the windscreen issue could be attributed to bad luck, the recurring radiator damage points to a potential design flaw.

These reported problems raise concerns about the reliability and durability of the Nissan NV200, particularly its gearbox and engine. Potential buyers should be aware of these potential issues and factor them into their purchasing decisions. Thoroughly research common Nissan NV200 problems and consider the potential long-term costs associated with ownership.
