Are you contemplating a fulfilling career change? Do you have a passion for a specific subject and dream of sharing that knowledge with eager minds? The Shenandoah University Career Switcher Program offers a streamlined pathway for professionals like you to transition into the rewarding field of education in Virginia. This program is designed to equip you with the necessary skills and credentials to become a licensed teacher, and this guide will walk you through each step of the application process.
Step 1: Secure Your Spot with the Advanced Tuition Deposit/Registration
Spaces in the Shenandoah University Career Switcher Program are highly competitive, and classes fill up quickly each semester. To secure your place in the upcoming cohort, the first crucial step is to submit a non-refundable registration fee of $100. This deposit not only reserves your spot but also demonstrates your commitment to the program. The deposit is then directly applied towards your overall tuition costs, with the remaining balance due at the time of official registration.

Step 3: Prepare For and Schedule Your PRAXIS Subject Assessment
A fundamental requirement for entry into the Career Switcher Program is passing the PRAXIS Subject Assessment in your chosen teaching subject. This exam validates your content knowledge in the area you wish to teach and is a Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) requirement. Scheduling and preparing for the PRAXIS exam takes time, so it’s crucial to address this early in your application process.
Shenandoah University recognizes the PRAXIS Subject Assessment test codes set by the VDOE. You can find a comprehensive list of these codes to identify the correct test for your subject area here: PRAXIS SUBJECT ASSESSMENT TEST CODES. Note that only one passing PRAXIS Subject Assessment score is needed for program entry, even if you aim for multiple endorsements.
For general information about the PRAXIS Subject Assessment Exams, visit the ETS website: ETS’ WEBSITE. To prepare effectively, explore the test preparation materials available on the ETS website: PRAXIS Subject Assessment Test Preparation.
Remember to check the ETS website for scheduled test dates and locations and register well in advance to avoid late registration fees: PRAXIS SUBJECT ASSESSMENT TEST DATES AND LOCATIONS. After taking the exam, allow approximately four weeks for score processing and ensure your official scores are forwarded to the Office of Extended and Distance Education at Shenandoah University via email.
Step 4: Submit Remaining Required Documents
As you gather them, submit the remaining necessary documents to the Office of Extended and Distance Education. These documents, alongside your deposit and application, complete your application package. The required documents include:
- Official, sealed transcripts from all colleges and universities you have attended.
- Official PRAXIS test scores.
- A current resume outlining your professional experience.
Approximately six weeks before the program’s Fall or Spring start date, the program coordinator will contact you regarding your application status. The Office of Extended and Distance Education will then formally notify you via email once you are fully accepted into the Career Switcher program. Ensure all application materials and your final tuition payment are submitted to the Office of Extended and Distance Education roughly three weeks before the program commencement. Exact deadlines will be provided in your registration materials.
