MPVI2: The Only HP Tuners Option for the Explorer ST?

The HP Tuners Mpvi2 is a popular interface for tuning vehicles, and it seems to be the only option for the Ford Explorer ST. Recent experiences suggest that the RTD, a previously available interface, may no longer be offered by HP Tuners. The HP Tuners website vehicle list specifically states that the Explorer ST only works with the MPVI2, with no mention of the RTD. This is surprising as several tuners have used the RTD on these vehicles in the past.

This raises the question of the RTD’s availability and cost comparison to the MPVI2. Previously, the RTD was presented as a default option, with the possibility of upgrading to the MPVI2 for a small additional fee and potentially longer lead time. However, current information suggests the MPVI2 is the sole offering.

Pricing for the MPVI2 with four credits is listed at $499 on the HP Tuners website. This cost, combined with the price of a custom tune, aligns with the total cost previously associated with purchasing an RTD and a tune. Initially, the RTD was believed to be approximately $50 cheaper than the MPVI2.

For those considering tuning their Explorer ST or other vehicles, the MPVI2 seems to be the necessary interface. The MPVI2’s versatility extends beyond the Explorer ST, making it a worthwhile investment for owners of multiple vehicles, including Corvettes, that are compatible with HP Tuners software. The ability to use the MPVI2 on various vehicles enhances its long-term value compared to the potentially discontinued RTD.
