Dr. Susan A. Martin: Expert in Behavioral Health at McLaren Bay Region-Family Medicine Residency & MSU Program

Dr. Susan A. Martin, PsyD, is a highly experienced and dedicated Behavioral Health Academic Program Director at McLaren Bay Region-Family Medicine Residency (MBR-FMR), a program affiliated with Michigan State University (MSU). Her career is distinguished by a deep commitment to integrating behavioral health into primary care, particularly within family medicine settings.

Dr. Martin’s expertise is grounded in strong academic credentials. She earned her PsyD in clinical psychology from the Florida Institute of Technology. Further solidifying her clinical foundation, she completed her pre-doctoral internship at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas in 2004. Her post-doctoral training included a 2-year fellowship in health psychology within primary care at Michigan State University/Consortium for Advanced Psychology Training/Flint Area Medical Education at McLaren Flint, directly linking her early career to both MSU and McLaren.

Following her fellowship, Dr. Martin specialized in urban family medicine residency training. She served for 9 years as the Director of Behavioral Sciences at St. Joseph’s Family Medicine Residency Program in Phoenix, AZ. Later, she transitioned to rural settings, spending 8 years teaching family medicine residents behavioral health training at Full Circle Health/Family Medicine Residency of Idaho in Boise, Nampa, and Caldwell. Her contributions in Idaho were recognized with the Faculty of the Year award at the Family Medicine Residency of Idaho-Caldwell in 2022-2023. She was also honored as the Physician Vitality Champion recipient in 2023 by the Ada County Medical Society in Boise, Idaho, underscoring her dedication to physician well-being. Beyond residency training, Dr. Martin demonstrated leadership as the program director for the 5 training sites at the Idaho Psychology Internship Consortium (ID-PIC) and as a primary site supervisor for psychology trainees at Full Circle Health-Nampa. Her professional engagement extends to organizational leadership, having served as past president of the Idaho Psychological Association (IPA) and contributed to its Ethics Committee, Continuing Education Committee, Advocacy and Legislative Affairs Committee, and Diversity Task Force.

Currently at MBR-FMR, Dr. Martin is instrumental in educating Family Medicine Residents and medical students. Her teaching focuses on the crucial behavioral and psychological dimensions of health and treatment within primary care and interprofessional teams, aligning with the core principles of the McLaren Health Care system and the MSU program. As a member of the Michigan Psychological Association and a committee member for membership and integrated care, she remains active in her field. Dr. Martin’s key areas of interest include integrated behavioral health, collaborative interprofessional teamwork in primary care environments, and the application of short-term cognitive behavioral outpatient interventions for both adult and older patient populations. Her ongoing work at McLaren Bay Region-Family Medicine Residency continues to advance the integration of behavioral health within family medicine, benefiting both medical professionals in training and the patients they serve within the community and through the MSU program.
