Asmae Lichir: A Smith College Student’s Journey From Cardboard Microscope to Patent-Pending Invention

Asmae Lichir, a single mother, Ada Comstock scholar, and biology major at Smith College, embodies resilience and determination. Her journey, from a childhood fascination with science to a groundbreaking invention, is a testament to the transformative power of education and perseverance. This article explores Lichir’s inspiring path and her current endeavors at Smith.

From Childhood Dreams to Higher Education

Lichir’s passion for science ignited in her youth with a makeshift cardboard microscope. Despite discouragement from a teacher, this early experience fueled her ambition to become a doctor. Facing societal expectations to marry instead of pursuing her education, Lichir found support from her family, who recognized her potential. She credits her aunt for teaching her math and her parents for funding her private school education.

Arriving in the United States marked a turning point. Financial hardship forced Lichir to work long hours while attending school to support her family. Though challenging, this period solidified her self-belief and resilience. She navigated college bankruptcy, marriage, divorce, and teen motherhood, emerging stronger and more determined.

Finding Support and Reigniting Dreams

A pivotal role as an advisory leader for Healthy Families, a support program, helped Lichir reclaim her aspirations. Inspired by her experience, she enrolled at Bunker Hill Community College, excelling in her studies and research. A professor’s encouragement and guidance led her to apply to Smith College’s Ada Comstock Scholars Program, designed for students with nontraditional educational paths.

A Smithie’s Pursuit of Scientific Innovation

Now at Smith, Lichir thrives in an environment that fosters intellectual growth and empowerment. Her “be your most powerful self” notebook serves as a daily reminder of her potential and the transformative mission of her fellow students. Currently, she is collaborating with a professor to patent an invention that will form the foundation of her company, Pathopocket Lab. This achievement would fulfill another of Lichir’s ambitions: to become a CEO.

Embracing the Power of Smith

Lichir recognizes the profound impact of her Smith education. As a first-generation college student, single mother, and woman in science, she embodies the strength and resilience cultivated within the Smith community. Despite being in her first semester, she feels a deep sense of belonging and connection.

Lichir’s story is an inspiration, highlighting the power of perseverance and the transformative potential of education. Her journey from a cardboard microscope to a patent-pending invention showcases the unwavering spirit of a Smith College student determined to make a difference in the world.
