Mission Statement

The Kaweah Delta Health Care District (KDHCD) Psychiatry Residency Program is dedicated to cultivating competent, confident, and evidence-based psychiatrists. Our mission is to empower residents to become leaders and educators in the vital field of mental health, providing exemplary and comprehensive patient care to those in need within our community and beyond.

Kaweah Health, a prominent healthcare organization, serves as the cornerstone of our psychiatry residency program. With over 400 patient beds, Kaweah Health offers a rich and diverse clinical environment for training. Our West campus is home to a bustling 48-bed acute inpatient Mental Health Hospital, conveniently located just a 10-minute drive from the main medical/surgical campus. This proximity ensures residents are seamlessly integrated into the broader medical system while gaining focused psychiatric training. Furthermore, our Emergency Department, handling over 90,000 patient visits annually, provides invaluable experience in crisis intervention, comprehensive risk assessment, and psychiatric consultation within a fast-paced setting.

The Kaweah Delta Health Care District Kdhcd Program Psychiatry Residency extends its training beyond the hospital walls. Residents gain diverse experiences at Kaweah Health Rural Clinics, providing exposure to community psychiatry and the unique challenges of rural mental healthcare. Our partnerships with Tulare County Mental Health and the Tulare Youth Service Bureau further broaden the scope of training, offering experiences in public mental health systems and child and adolescent psychiatry. These varied clinical settings ensure a well-rounded and comprehensive residency experience.

As a public, non-profit hospital situated in a federally designated underserved area, the Kaweah Health Mental Health Hospital carries a profound commitment to providing care to vulnerable populations. A core objective of the Kaweah Delta Health Care District KDHCD program psychiatry residency is to address the critical mental health needs of underserved communities, including the poor, uninsured, immigrant farmworkers, homeless individuals, and those with chronic mental illness. We prioritize the integration of mental healthcare with primary care services, ensuring that patients receive holistic, personalized, and comprehensive care for all their health concerns.
