This initiative, officially titled the Dementia Care Action Plan, is strategically designed to improve awareness, bolster support systems and services, and empower the healthcare workforce to provide superior care for those affected by dementia.
This ambitious plan encompasses 36 distinct actions, thoughtfully organized into four critical focus areas, ensuring a holistic approach to dementia care in Newfoundland and Labrador:
- Elevating public awareness about dementia, actively working to reduce the risk factors associated with the condition, and combating societal stigma surrounding dementia.
- Streamlining the process for diagnosis and ensuring seamless coordination of care services for individuals and families navigating dementia.
- Expanding and strengthening the support systems and services available to individuals living with dementia, as well as their dedicated care partners and families, recognizing the crucial role of home care programs.
- Investing in professional learning and development opportunities for healthcare professionals, enhancing their skills and knowledge in dementia care to improve the quality of services delivered within the Home Dementia Care Program Nl and across the care spectrum.
Budget 2023 earmarks an annual investment of $3.5 million specifically for the implementation and ongoing support of this vital Dementia Care Action Plan. This financial commitment underscores the province’s dedication to improving the lives of individuals affected by dementia and their families through robust home dementia care program nl initiatives and related services.
Statistics from the Alzheimer Society of Newfoundland and Labrador highlight the pressing need for enhanced dementia care, noting that over 10,000 individuals in the province are currently living with dementia. Alarmingly, this figure is projected to rise to 14,000 by 2035, driven by the province’s aging population. This increase emphasizes the urgency and importance of proactive measures like the home dementia care program nl to address the growing demand for specialized care.
To guide the development and execution of the Dementia Care Action Plan, a dedicated Dementia Action Council was formed last summer.
