Program Your 2024 Genie Garage Door Opener to Your Car’s Remote System (HomeLink & Car2U)

Integrating your Genie garage door opener with your car’s built-in remote system, whether it’s HomeLink or Car2U, offers unparalleled convenience. No more fumbling for a separate remote – control your garage door directly from your vehicle. These systems, typically featuring three buttons located on your visor or overhead console, are powered by your car’s electrical system, eliminating the need for batteries. Genie garage door openers are fully compatible with both HomeLink and Car2U. HomeLink-equipped cars usually have a single LED indicator and a house icon on the middle button, while Car2U systems have three LEDs, one above each button.

Programming HomeLink® System for Your Genie Opener

For detailed instructions in PDF format, you can refer to the official HomeLink programming guide. A helpful video tutorial is also available here.

Step 1: Clear Existing HomeLink Programming

Before programming your Genie opener, it’s best to clear any previous settings from your HomeLink system. To do this, press and hold the first and third HomeLink buttons simultaneously. Keep holding them until the indicator light blinks slowly and then rapidly for about 20 seconds. Once it blinks rapidly, release both buttons. This reset ensures a clean slate for programming your 2024 Genie model or any other new opener.

NOTE: Clearing HomeLink will erase all previously programmed garage door openers. You will need to reprogram any other devices after this step.

Step 2: Train HomeLink Using Your Genie Remote

Decide which HomeLink button you want to use for your Genie garage door. Take your Genie remote and hold it approximately two inches away from the chosen HomeLink button in your car. Press and hold the button on your Genie remote that you typically use to open your garage door. While still holding the Genie remote button, immediately press and hold the selected HomeLink button in your car. Continue holding both buttons until the indicator light on the HomeLink system changes from a slow to a rapid blink. Once it blinks rapidly, release both buttons. This step teaches your car’s HomeLink system to recognize the signal from your Genie remote.

Step 3: Program HomeLink to Your 2024 Genie Garage Door Opener

The programming process varies slightly depending on whether you have a newer or older Genie garage door opener model. Here’s how to program HomeLink to both types:

For Newer Genie Garage Door Openers with a “Program” Button

Newer Genie models, including many 2024 models, feature a “Program” button on the powerhead unit. This simplifies the programming process.

  1. Locate the “PROGRAM” button on your Genie garage door opener motor unit (powerhead). Press and hold this button until a round blue LED light turns ON. Release the button. A long purple LED will then begin to flash, indicating the unit is in programming mode.
  2. Immediately press and hold the HomeLink button you programmed in Step 2 for two seconds, and then release it. Press the same HomeLink button again for two seconds and release. The long LED on the Genie opener should flash blue and then turn off, confirming the signal was received.
  3. Press the HomeLink button a few more times to test the connection and activate your garage door. Your door should now respond to your HomeLink button.

For Older Genie Garage Door Openers with a “Learn” Button

Older Genie models utilize a “Learn” button, often red, for programming.

  1. Find the “learn code” button on your Genie garage door opener’s powerhead. Press and release this button. A red LED light will start blinking, signaling it’s ready to learn a new code.
  2. Press and hold the HomeLink button you programmed in Step 2 one time. The red LED on the opener will stop blinking and remain on steadily.
  3. Press and hold the same HomeLink button one more time. The red LED will turn off.
  4. Press the HomeLink button again to test. Your Genie garage door should now open or close when you press the programmed HomeLink button.

Programming Car2U® System for Your Genie Opener

For in-depth instructions on programming Car2U, you can consult the detailed PDF guide.

Step 1: Reset Car2U to Factory Default Settings

Car2U systems come with factory default settings that pre-assign buttons to specific brands. For Genie openers, it’s often necessary to reset and reprogram the buttons. The default Car2U settings are:

  • Button 1 = Genie® Manufactured Openers
  • Button 2 = LiftMaster® Manufactured Openers
  • Button 3 = Wayne Dalton® Manufactured Openers

To reset Car2U to these factory defaults, press and hold buttons 1 and 3 simultaneously for 20 seconds, or until all three LEDs start flashing. Release both buttons once the LEDs are flashing. The Car2U system is now reset to its original factory settings, ready for reprogramming for your Genie garage door opener.

NOTE: Resetting Car2U will erase all previously programmed garage door openers.

Step 2: Program Car2U to Your Genie Opener (2024 and Older Models)

Similar to HomeLink, the programming steps for Car2U depend on whether you have a newer or older Genie garage door opener.

For Newer Genie Models (Including 2024)

  1. Press and hold the “PROGRAM” button on your Genie garage door opener powerhead until the round blue LED turns ON. Release the button. The long purple LED will begin flashing.
  2. Press and hold the Car2U button you wish to program for your Genie opener for two seconds and release. Press the same button again for two seconds and release. The long LED on the Genie opener will flash blue and then turn off, indicating successful signal reception.
  3. Press the programmed Car2U button a few more times to test. Your garage door should now respond.

For Older Genie Models

  1. Press and release the “learn code” button on your Genie garage door opener powerhead. The red LED will start blinking.
  2. Press and hold your desired Car2U button one time. The red LED will stop blinking and stay illuminated.
  3. Press and hold the same Car2U button one more time. The red LED will turn off.
  4. Test the programming by pressing the Car2U button again. The garage door should activate.

Step 3: Reassigning a Car2U Button for a Genie Opener

If you want to use a specific Car2U button that is not Button 1 for your Genie opener, you can reassign it. For example, if you prefer to use Button 2 or 3 for your Genie 2024 model opener:

  1. Press and hold Car2U buttons 1 and 3 for just ONE SECOND, and then release. All three LEDs will light up solid red.
  2. Press and hold the button you want to reassign to Genie (either button 2 or 3). The LED above that button will start flashing. While continuing to hold this button down, press and release button 1. Then, press and release button 1 again.
  3. Release the button you were holding in step 2. Wait for the LED to stop flashing. This button is now programmed for your Genie opener. Repeat Step 2 if you need to program a second Genie opener to another Car2U button.
