Maximizing Savings and Benefits with the U.S. Government Rental Car Program

The U.S. Government Rental Car Program is designed to offer significant advantages to federal government employees and service members when they need to rent vehicles for official travel. This program, encompassing cars, passenger vans, and SUVs, ensures reduced rates and a suite of special benefits through a network of approved rental car companies. Governed by the U.S. Government Rental Car Agreement #5, this initiative aims to streamline the rental process and provide cost-effective solutions for government-related transportation needs.

One of the most compelling aspects of this program is the guaranteed vehicle availability. If your reserved vehicle class isn’t available upon arrival, rental companies are obligated to provide a vehicle of equal or higher class. Furthermore, in situations where a vehicle isn’t ready within an hour of your arrival at the counter, the program ensures alternative transportation to your destination, arranged and covered by the rental company. A vehicle will then be delivered to you at no additional cost as soon as one becomes available. This commitment extends to eliminating blackout dates and minimum rental periods, alongside unlimited mileage for most rentals, excluding one-way arrangements. While rates are structured to be competitive, they are also capped at established maximum rates, ensuring budget predictability.

Adding to the program’s appeal is the elimination of extra fees. Government travelers benefit from no additional charges for authorized additional drivers or for drivers aged 21 and older. While drivers aged 18-20 may encounter an underage/young driver fee, which is reimbursable, it’s important to note that these younger drivers must be listed on the rental agreement, even as additional drivers.

Perhaps the most significant advantage is the inclusive insurance coverage. The program provides Loss Damage Waiver (LDW)/Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) and Liability Insurance at no extra charge. The liability coverage is substantial, covering $25,000 for property damage, $100,000 per person, and $300,000 per incident for personal injury or wrongful death. Due to this comprehensive coverage, government travelers are explicitly advised against accepting any additional liability, collision, damage, or other insurance offered at the rental counter, ensuring cost savings and preventing redundant coverage.
