The Detroit Series 60 engine is known for its reliability and power. However, like any engine, it can experience issues, including low fuel pressure. One common cause of low fuel pressure in a Detroit Series 60 is a faulty fuel pressure regulator. The Detroit Series 60 fuel pressure regulator is located on the back of the cylinder head. It’s integrated with the check valve, forming a single unit often referred to as the combo check valve/regulator. In a recent case study, a 2006 Detroit Series 60 engine experienced significantly low fuel pressure. Initial diagnostics revealed a seized injector, leading to a fuel-filled crankcase. Six new injectors and injector cups were installed along with a replacement rocker arm. An oil change and fuel filter replacement were also performed.

While these repairs improved engine performance, the fuel pressure remained low. After ruling out other potential causes, the mechanic focused on the fuel pressure regulator. The old regulator was producing only 10 psi at 600 rpm, well below the Detroit spec of 17 psi.

Replacing the combo check valve/regulator resulted in a significant improvement. The fuel pressure increased to 16 psi at 600 rpm, almost meeting the manufacturer’s specification. This confirmed the faulty regulator was the root cause of the low fuel pressure issue. While a new regulator was installed in this instance, the old one appeared serviceable. A future attempt to clean and restore the original regulator is planned.
