Delpfi’s Bid for European Capital of Culture 2021

Delphi, Greece, officially launched its bid for the title of “European Capital of Culture 2021” on Friday, October 30, 2015. The announcement took place at the “Konstantinos Karamanlis” hall of the European Cultural Centre in Delphi. The event highlighted the historical and cultural significance of Delphi and garnered strong support from regional municipalities.

Regional Support for Delpfi’s Candidacy

The President of the Regional Union of Municipalities of Central Greece, Mr. Loukas Yperifanos, represented the region and conveyed their unanimous support for Delphi’s bid. Mayors from various municipalities across Central Greece, including Dorida, Lamia, Thebes, Eretria, Aliartos, and Stylida, attended the event, demonstrating a united front in favor of Delpfi’s candidacy. Representatives from the municipalities of Levadia and Orchomenos, as well as the Region of Central Greece, were also present.

Mr. Yperifanos emphasized the importance of Delphi’s endeavor and its undeniable regional significance. He stated that the Regional Union of Municipalities had unanimously decided to promote solidarity and mutual support among the municipalities. He declared that Central Greece was united and would strive to make Delphi the European Capital of Culture for 2021. He further stressed the critical importance for municipalities and local communities to set ambitious goals and actively pursue them, especially during challenging times.

A Message of Unity and Cultural Significance

Mr. Yperifanos assured the Mayor of Delphi and all those involved in the effort that they were not alone in this endeavor. He pledged the full support of the Regional Union of Municipalities and all its member municipalities, promising to work together towards achieving this common goal.

The event concluded with a speech by the host, Mayor of Delphi and member of the Board of Directors of the Regional Union of Municipalities of Central Greece, Mr. Athanasios Panagiotopoulos. He emphasized that if Greece wanted to send a broader message of intellectual and philosophical reflection to Europe, Delphi was uniquely positioned to deliver it.

Notable Figures and Performances

A highlight of the evening was the presence of Mr. Spyros Merkouris, brother of the late Melina Mercouri, a prominent Greek actress and Minister of Culture. Mr. Merkouris served as a key speaker and expressed his strong support for Delphi’s candidacy. The event also featured performances by the Lyceum Club of Greek Women – Thebes Branch, who accompanied musical renditions of ancient texts with their choreographies. Talented performers and musicians, along with the children’s choir of the Amfissa Conservatory, concluded the celebratory evening with captivating performances.

The event marked a significant step in Delpfi’s journey to become the European Capital of Culture 2021, showcasing the city’s historical importance and its potential to contribute to the cultural landscape of Europe.
