The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is committed to providing comprehensive health care services to America’s veterans, which includes a robust Chiropractic Health Care Program. The mission of this program is to deliver the highest quality chiropractic care, advancing education and research within the field to better serve the veteran community.
What is the VA Chiropractic Health Care Program?
Chiropractic services are a standard component of the VA Medical Benefits Package, ensuring that eligible veterans have access to this type of care. Veterans can access these services through a referral from their VA primary care or specialist provider. The VA ensures availability of chiropractic care across all Veterans Integrated Service Networks (VISN), offering on-site clinics at various VA facilities. For locations without on-site chiropractic services, the VA Community Care Program facilitates access through community providers.
VA Doctors of Chiropractic (DCs) are experts in diagnosing and managing neuromusculoskeletal conditions without surgery. They frequently address issues affecting the lower back, neck, and other joints. Integrated within primary care, rehabilitation, and pain management teams, VA DCs provide care that aligns with both VA and external evidence-based guidelines. Treatment plans often include patient education, active rehabilitation strategies, spinal manipulation, and other manual therapies. Additionally, VA chiropractors may offer acupuncture and other non-pharmacological treatments to enhance veteran care options.
History of Chiropractic Care within the VA
Responding directly to the needs and demands of veterans, Congress authorized the VA to incorporate chiropractic care in 1999. By 2004, chiropractic services were available to all eligible veterans across all medical centers, either directly at VA facilities or through community care arrangements.
A key study highlighted the significant growth of VA chiropractic services between fiscal years 2005 and 2015. During this period, the number of on-station VA chiropractic clinics grew from 27 to 65, and the number of veterans receiving care increased dramatically from over 4,000 to more than 37,000 annually. The VA continuously evaluates and adapts its chiropractic health care program to effectively meet the evolving needs of veterans.
Accessing Chiropractic Care
Veterans interested in utilizing the chiropractic health care program should speak with their VA primary care provider to obtain a referral. This ensures that veterans can access the benefits of chiropractic care, contributing to their overall health and well-being.
