What is the Career Training Program (CTP)?

The CTP offers eligible UFT paraprofessionals financial assistance towards their first Bachelor’s degree. The program covers tuition for 3-6 credits per semester at participating colleges or universities. Participants registered for and actively taking 5+ credit hours qualify for 2.5 hours of weekly release time for studying. A summer stipend is also available to support summer studies.

Who is Eligible for the CTP?

To qualify for the CTP, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Full-Time Employment: Be a full-time paraprofessional in a NYC public school without a Bachelor’s degree. Substitute paraprofessionals are not eligible.
  • Payroll Status: Maintain full-time paraprofessional payroll status throughout the application school year.
  • Matriculation: Provide proof of matriculation into a degree program after completing 45 credits.
  • Credit Limit: The program covers a maximum of 120 credits towards your first Bachelor’s degree. This includes transfer credits. Exceptions may be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
  • GPA Requirement: Maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA (“C” average) to remain eligible. Students falling below a 2.0 GPA will lose eligibility for the CTP voucher. The NYC DOE will not cover courses with “F” grades, late withdrawals, or unofficial withdrawals.

Financial Aid and the CTP

The CTP coordinates with existing financial aid programs. If you receive a Federal Pell Grant or New York State Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) grant, these funds will be applied first. The NYC DOE will then cover the remaining tuition balance. Note: The program doesn’t cover course materials, activity fees, application fees, technology fees, or other charges levied by the college or university.

When and How to Apply

Applications are accepted during specific periods:

  • Fall Semester: May 1st – June 30th
  • Spring Semester: September 1st – October 31st
  • Summer Semester: February 1st – March 31st

Important: Submit a separate application for each semester. Unused vouchers cannot be transferred. Use your NYCPS email address when applying to ensure receipt of your confirmation and voucher.
