What are the requirements to be eligible for the Second Chance Program?

To be considered for participation, job seekers must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a resident of the City of Chicago.
  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • Successfully complete an approved Job Readiness Training Program and obtain a certificate of completion. (Referrals are exclusively accepted from our listed agency partners).

Furthermore, Second Chance Program applicants must be released from any of the following:

  • Drug or alcohol treatment program
  • Work release center

How many positions are available in the Second Chance Program?

The CTA can employ up to 315 Second Chance Program participants at any given time. Participant start and end dates are ongoing, offering continuous opportunities.

What is the duration of the Second Chance Program?

Program participants may engage in the program for up to 12 months, contingent on satisfactory job performance and attendance.

What is the compensation for participants in the program?

Participants are compensated at a rate of $16.67 per hour for up to 40 hours per week. Paychecks are issued bi-weekly. Additionally, participants enjoy the benefit of free transportation on CTA buses and trains, Pace suburban buses, and Metra trains throughout their employment in the program.

What steps follow after I am invited to apply to the program?

Once you receive an invitation to apply, the process includes:

  • Completing a formal application.
  • Attending a Program Overview and Interview session.
  • Undergoing fingerprinting for background processing.
  • Completing a medical review.

What are the subsequent steps once I am selected for the program?

Upon selection, the next phases are:

  • Orientation: Participants attend a comprehensive new employee orientation. This session thoroughly covers program guidelines, eligibility requirements, job functions, placements, and Union participation.
  • Training: Participants are required to complete paid training before commencing work at their assigned location.

What are the expectations for participants during the program?

During your participation, you are expected to:

  • Maintain active engagement with your referring agency.
  • Arrive at work punctually and maintain consistent attendance.
  • Adhere to all CTA rules, policies, and procedures.
  • Be available to work any assigned shift at any CTA location, as CTA operates 24/7.

What are the outcomes upon successful completion of the program?

Upon successfully completing the 12-month program and maintaining good standing, participants will receive:

  • A certificate of completion from the CTA.
  • A letter of reference from the CTA.

Graduates of the program will have gained enhanced skills, making them competitive candidates for permanent positions. Program graduates are encouraged to apply for open positions at the CTA.
